QUESTION:

Problem 48P

IP Consider a region in space where a uniform electric field E = 6500 N/C points in the negative x direction, (a) What is the orientation of the equipotential surfaces? Explain, (b) If you

move in the positive x direction, does the electric potential increase or decrease? Explain, (c) What is the distance between the +14-V and the +16-V equipotentials?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3:

a)

Here, we have to find the orientation of the equipotential surfaces.

The electric field is uniform and points in the -ve x direction.

As we know that, the equipotentials are always perpendicular to the electric field lines, here the equipotential will be parallel to y and z axis.

So, the equipotential surfaces are all the planes those are parallel to y-z plane.
