The Polaroid Sunglasses have a transmission axis in vertical direction to cut off maximum light.

As the sea is horizontal, it has polarization horizontally.When we sit upright, the transmission axis of sunglasses(vertical) becomes perpendicular to the polarization(horizontal) coming from reflected light from horizontal sea.This cancels maximum reflected light from the sea and thus the glare is reduced
