Testing Claims about Variation. In Exercises 516, test the given claim. Identifythe null hypothesis, alternative hypothesis, test statistic, P-value or critical value(s),conclusion about the null hypothesis, and final conclusion that addresses the originalclaim. Assume that a simple random sample is selected from a normally distributedpopulation. Pulse Rates of Men A simple random sample of 40 men results in a standard deviation of10.3 beats per minute (based on Data Set 1 in Appendix B). The normal range of pulse ratesof adults is typically given as 60 to 100 beats per minute. If the range rule of thumb is appliedto that normal range, the result is a standard deviation of 10 beats per minute. Use the sampleresults with a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that pulse rates of men have a standarddeviation equal to 10 beats per minute.
