QUESTION:

Problem 80HP

A 1-m3 rigid tank has propane at 100 kPa, 300 K and connected by a valve to another tank of 0.5 m3 with propane at 250 kPa, 400 K. The valve is opened, and the two tanks come to a uniform state at 325 K. What is the final pressure?

ANSWER:

Solution 80HP

Step 1 of 4:

Two tanks having propane at two different pressure and temperatures are connected together to have the final pressure T. Our aim is to find the final pressure of the combination.

The volume of tank 1 (V1) = 1 m3

The temperature of tank 1 (T1) = 300 K

The pressure of tank 1 (P1) = 125 kPa

The volume of tank 2 (V2) = 0.5 m3

The temperature of tank 2 (T2) = 400 K

The pressure of tank 2 (P2) = 250 kPa

The final temperature T = 325 K

The gas constant R = 0.1886 kJ/kgK (Table A.5)
