Chapter 12, Problem 12.39

(choose chapter or problem)

Odor is one of the principal criteria used by consumers when purchasing food products such as fish. Researchers thus compared relative amounts of various volatile substances present in samples of European freshwater catfish raised in an indoor concrete pool to those raised in an outdoor pond. The compound 1-penten-3-ol was amongst the 59 volatile molecules detected (J. Agric. Food Chem. 2005, 53, 72047211). Propose a multiple-step synthesis of this compound using acetylene as your only source of carbons. Note that you will have to use a reaction similar to the one described in the introduction to 12.28. OH 1-Penten-3-ol
