Chapter 4, Problem 4.137

(choose chapter or problem)

Various data can be used to find the composition of an alloy (a metallic mixture). Show that calculating the mass % of Mg in a magnesium-aluminum alloy (d 5 2.40 g/cm3) using each of the following pieces of data gives the same answer (within rounding): (a) a sample of the alloy has a mass of 0.263 g (d of Mg 5 1.74 g/cm3; d of Al 5 2.70 g/cm3); (b) an identical sample reacting with excess aqueous HCl forms 1.3831022 mol of H2; (c) an identical sample reacting with excess O2 forms 0.483 g of oxide.
