Chapter 3, Problem 18

(choose chapter or problem)

Modeling Data The table shows the annual sales S (in billions of dollars) of pharmacies and drug stores in the United States from 2007 through 2012.  (Source: U.S. Census Bureau)

(a) Use a graphing utility to create a scatter plot of the data. Let t represent the year, with t = 7 corresponding to 2007.

(b) Use the regression feature of the graphing utility to find a quadratic model for the data.

(c) Use the graphing utility to graph the model with the scatter plot from part (a).

(d) Use the model to estimate the first year when the annual sales of pharmacies and drug stores will be less than $200 billion. Is this a good model for predicting future sales? Explain.
