Interpreting IR spectrum-

Functional group bonds that can cause a change in dipole moment during vibration can absorb IR radiations. The frequency of radiation absorbed depends on the natural vibrational frequency of the functional group.

Therefore, each peak in the IR spectrum of a compound represents the functional groups present in it and therefore, IR spectroscopy is used to identify the functional groups in a compound.
