Chapter 12, Problem 18

(choose chapter or problem)

The bulkhead must be strong enough to withstand the force of the water if the compartment on one side of the bulkhead becomes flooded. Recall that force equals pressure times area and that the pressure at any point below the waters surface is proportional to that points distance from the surface. The proportionality constant is 62.4 lb/ft3, the density of water. Find to the nearest 100 lb the force exerted by the water. A vertical keel is to extend below the bottom of the ship. When turned upside down, the keel is similar in shape to the region under the graph of y = (ln x)/x for x 1.
