Exercises 19–23 concern the polynomialp (t) = a0 + a1t + + an-1tn-1 + tnand an n × n matrix Cp called the companion matrix of p: Use mathematical induction to prove that for det (C= n (a0 + a1++ an-1n-1 + n) = n p [Hint: Expanding by cofactors down the first column, show that det (Cp has the form B + na0, where B is a certain polynomial (by the induction assumption).]
