QUESTION:
What is the index of hydrogen deficiency for
(a) \(\mathrm{C}_{7} \mathrm{H}_{10} \mathrm{O}_{2}\) and
(b) \(\mathrm{C}_{5} \mathrm{H}_{4} \mathrm{~N}_{4}\)?
ANSWER:Step 1 of 2
(a)
The Index of Hydrogen Deficiency (IHD), is a count of how many molecules of \(H_{2}\) need to be added to a structure in order to obtain the corresponding saturated, acyclic species. Hence it takes a count of how many rings and multiple bonds are present in the structure.
The following formula used to calculate the following formula.
\(\text { Hydrogen Deficiency Index }=(C+1)-\frac{[H+X-N]}{2} \ldots \ldots \ldots \ldots . .(\mathbf{1})\)
C = Number of carbon atoms
H = Number of hydrogen atoms
X = Number of halogen atoms
N = Number of nitrogen atoms
The given molecular formula - \(C_{7} H_{10} O_{2}\)
Substitute the values in equation (1)
\(\begin{array}{c}
\text { Hydrogen Deficiency Index }=(7+1)-\frac{[10+0-0]}{2} \\
=8-5=3
\end{array}\)
Therefore, the index of hydrogen deficiency is 3.
