Three notched tensile bars (see Figure 4.39) have stress-concentration factors of 1, 1.5, and 2.5, respectively. Each is made of ductile steel having \(S_y = 100 \ \mathrm{ksi}\), has a rectangular cross section with a minimum area of \(1 \ \mathrm{in.}^2\), and is initially free of residual stress. Draw the shape of the stress-distribution curve for each case when (a) a tensile load of 50,000 lb is applied, (b) the load is increased to 100,000 lb, and (c) the load is removed.
