Chapter 16, Problem 16.37

(choose chapter or problem)

A worm gear reducer driven by a 1200-rpm motor has a chill-cast bronze gear and a hardened-steel worm. \(N_w\) = 3, \(N_g\) = 45, p = \(\frac{1}{2}\) in., c = 4.50 in., b = 1.00 in., and \(\phi_n\) = \(20^{\circ}\).

(a) Determine \(d_g\), \(d_w\), and L.

(b) Does the worm correspond to recommended proportions for maximum power-transmitting capacity? Is the worm large enough to be bored and mounted over a separate shaft?

(c) Estimate the efficiency using Eq. 16.34, and check the result with Figure 10.8. Is the unit self-locking?
