QUESTION:

For each of the following changes, indicate whether it corresponds to moving to the right or to the left in an NMR spectrum.

(a) Increasing radio frequency (at constant magnetic field strength);

(b) increasing magnetic field strength (at constant radio frequency; moving “upfield”; Section 10-4);

(c) increasing chemical shift;

(d) increased shielding.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 5

In the principle of NMR, an external magnetic field denoted as \(\mathrm{B}_{\mathrm{o}}\) is applied, and the frequency at which the nucleus achieves resonance is estimated. Electrons revolving around the nucleus produce a magnetic field that opposes \(\mathrm{B}_{\mathrm{o}}\). So it can be said that the electrons shield the nucleus from \(\mathrm{B}_{\mathrm{o}}\).
