Chapter 24, Problem 24-3

(choose chapter or problem)

3 It is desired to separate and determine hismuth, copper, and silver in a solutionthat is 0.0550 M in BiO+, 0.125 M in Cu2+, 0.0962 M in Ag', and 0.500 M inHCIO~. (a) Using 1.00 x 10-6 M as the criterion for quantitative removal, determinewhether separation of the three species is feasible by controlled-potentialelectrolysis. (b) If any separations are feasible, evaluate the range (versusAg-AgCI) within which the cathode potential should be controlled for thedeposition of each.
