Chapter 1, Problem 22

(choose chapter or problem)

How does the speed of a runner vary over the course of amarathon (a distance of 42.195 km)? Consider determiningboth the time to run the first 5 km and the time to runbetween the 35-km and 40-km points, and then subtractingthe former time from the latter time. A positive value of thisdifference corresponds to a runner slowing down toward theend of the race. The accompanying histogram is based ontimes of runners who participated in several differentJapanese marathons (Factors Affecting Runners MarathonPerformance, Chance, Fall, 1993: 2430).What are some interesting features of this histogram? Whatis a typical difference value? Roughly what proportion ofthe runners ran the late distance more quickly than the earlydistance?
