Chapter 9, Problem 63

(choose chapter or problem)

Toxaphene is an insecticide that has been identified as a pollutantin the Great Lakes ecosystem. To investigate theeffect of toxaphene exposure on animals, groups of ratswere given toxaphene in their diet. The articleReproduction Study of Toxaphene in the Rat (J. ofEnviron. Sci. Health, 1988: 101126) reports weight gains(in grams) for rats given a low dose (4 ppm) and for controlrats whose diet did not include the insecticide. The samplestandard deviation for 23 female control rats was 32 g andfor 20 female low-dose rats was 54 g. Does this data suggestthat there is more variability in low-dose weight gains thanin control weight gains? Assuming normality, carry out atest of hypotheses at significance level .05.
