Astrology Explained (or Not). Recall that astrology claims that thepositions of the planets in the sky at a persons moment of birthforever influence the persons life. In an attempt to explainthis claim, some astrologers have proposed that the source ofthe influence could be tidal effects from the planets.(a) Using the method of Cosmic Calculations 9.1, calculate thetidal force exerted by Jupiter on a baby being born on Earth. For the purposes of the calculation, assume the baby is 50centimeters long, so the distance of the babys near side toJupiter is Jupiters distance minus 25 centimeters (0.25meter), and the distance to the babys far side from Jupiteris Jupiters distance plus 25 centimeters; for Jupiters distance, use 780 million kilometers (which is about the average).(b) Jupiter, of course, is not the only gravitational influence onthe baby. For example, there is also a gravitational force act ing between the baby and the doctor supervising the delivery.Calculate the gravitational force that is pulling the babytoward the doctor. Assume that the babys mass is 3kilograms and the doctors mass is 50 kilograms, and thatthey are 0.5 meter apart during delivery.(c) Compare the tidal effect of Jupiter on the baby to thegravitational pull between the baby and the doctor. Based onyour answer, is it plausible to claim that tidal effects of theplanets can influence the babys life?
