Concentrated sulfuric acid (9598%) adds to alkenes to give alkyl hydrogen sulfates
Chapter 6, Problem 6.43(choose chapter or problem)
Concentrated sulfuric acid (9598%) adds to alkenes to give alkyl hydrogen sulfates. Markovnikovs rule is followed. The reaction is useful in an industrial synthesis of isopropyl alcohol because the resulting alkyl hydrogen sulfate gives isopropyl alcohol by O S bond cleavage on hydrolysis. CH3CH CH2 HOSOH CH3CHCH3 OSO2OH O O + CH3CHCH3 OH H2O heat Propene Sulfuric acid Isopropyl hydrogen sulfate Isopropyl alcohol A mixture of three isomeric alkenes gives a single C4H10O alcohol by this method. What is the alcohol, and what are the three alkenes?
