Chapter 17, Problem 17.15

(choose chapter or problem)

Not all biological reactions of amino acids involving imine intermediates require pyridoxal phosphate. The first step in the conversion of proline to glutamic acid is an oxidation giving the imine shown. Once formed, this imine undergoes hydrolysis to a species having the molecular formula C5H9NO3, which then goes on to produce glutamic acid. Suggest a structure for the C5H9NO3 species. (Hint: There are two reasonable possibilities; one is a hemiaminal, the other is not cyclic.)
