Strains that secrete capsules appear smooth (type S) and are virulent or lethal in mice 2. Strains that don’t secrete capsules appear rough (type R) and are benign  The capsules secreted create a protective coat around the bacteria making it harder for the mouse’s immune system to kill it  ransformation Principle: Genetic material was transferred when Griffith injected living type R and heat killed type S bacteria into the mouse. Hershey & Chase: Studied bacteriophage that infects E. coli  Phage coat is made of protein  DNA is found inside capsid DNA DNA Protein Phage head (capsid)
