Problem 5CQ

A 0.2 kg plastic cart and a 20 kg lead cart can both roll without friction on a horizontal surface. Equal forces are used to push both carts forward for a distance of 1 m, starting from rest. After traveling 1 m, is the momentum of the plastic cart greater than, less than, or equal to the momentum of the lead cart? Explain.

QUESTION:

Explain.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

We have to explain, is the momentum of the plastic cart greater than, less than, or equal to the momentum of the lead cart, after traveling \(1 \mathrm{~m}\).

The initial momentum of both the carts are equal to zero as they are starting from rest. The final momentum (or change in momentum) for the cart is given by the integral.

                                             \(m v_{f}-m v_{i}=\int_{t_{i}}^{t_{f}} F d t\)

\(F\) is the force applied on the cart which is the same for both carts. \(d t\) is the time it takes for the carts to travel \(1 \mathrm{~m}\)

Now, shorter is the time less is the momentum of the cart after travelling \(1 \mathrm{~m}\).
