The emf of the cell Pt

Chapter 7, Problem 7.17

(choose chapter or problem)

The emf of the cell \(\mathrm{Pt}\left|\mathrm{H}_2\left(\mathrm{~g}, p^\omega\right)\right| \mathrm{HCl}(\mathrm{aq}, b)\left|\mathrm{Hg}_2 \mathrm{Cl}_2(\mathrm{~s})\right| \mathrm{Hg}(\mathrm{l})\) has been measured with high precision (G.J. Hills and D.J.G. Ives, J. Chem. Soc., 311 (1951)) with the following results at \(25^{\circ} \mathrm{C}\) :

\(\begin{array}{llllll}b /\left(\mathrm{mmol} \mathrm{kg}^{-1}\right) & 1.6077 & 3.0769 & 5.0403 & 7.6938 & 10.9474 \\ E / \mathrm{V} & 0.60080 & 0.56825 & 0.54366 & 0.52267 & 0.50532\end{array}\)

Determine the standard emf of the cell and the mean activity coefficient of \(\mathrm{HCl}\) at these molalities. (Make a least-squares fit of the data to the best straight line.)
