Problem 6CQ

A 0.2 kg plastic cart and a 20 kg lead cart both roll without friction on a horizontal surface. Equal forces are used to push both carts forward a distance of 1 m, starting from rest. After traveling 1 m, is the kinetic energy of the plastic cart greater than, less than, or equal to the kinetic energy of the lead cart? Explain.

Problem 6CQ

After traveling 1 m, is the kinetic energy of the plastic cart greater than, less than, or equal to the kinetic energy of the lead cart? Explain.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

The equal forces are acting on the plastic and the lead carts having different masses. The work done on the carts is equal as the forces are equal when the cross equal distance.

The kinetic energy when they cross 1 m from the starting point will be the same as the work done the systems are the same.

The work done is nothing but the change in the kinetic energy.

The initial kinetic energy (Ki) is zero. The final kinetic energy is expressed as
