QUESTION:

Problem 8CQ

A spring has an unstretched length of 10 cm. It exerts a restoring force F when stretched to a length of 11 cm.

a. For what length of the spring is its restoring force 3F?

b. At what compressed length is the restoring force 2F?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

(a)

Here we need to calculate the length of the spring when the restoring force is equal to \(F^{1}=3 F\).

The given spring has a force constant \(k\) with original unstretched length \(x_{0}=10 \mathrm{~cm}\) and when a restoring force \(F\) is applied by spring when it is stretched to a length of \(x_{1}=11 \mathrm{~cm}\).

The change in length of the spring is \(\Delta x=x_{1}-x_{0}\)

                                                \(\Delta x=11 \mathrm{~cm}-10 \mathrm{~cm}=1 \mathrm{~cm}\)
