QUESTION:

Problem 31P

A 20 kg sphere is at the origin and a 10 kg sphere is at (x, y) = (20 cm, 0 cm). At what point or points could you place a small mass such that the net gravitational force on it due to the spheres is zero?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

The two spheres are separated by a distance \(r\). We are going to find the distance from the first sphere where the net gravitational force is zero on the test mass.

The mass of the first sphere \(\mathrm{m}_{1}=20 \mathrm{~kg}\)

The mass of the second sphere \(m_{2}=10 \mathrm{~kg}\)

The distance between the two spheres \(\mathrm{r}=20 \mathrm{~cm}=0.2 \mathrm{~m}\)
