QUESTION:

Problem 66CP

While visiting Planet Physics, you toss a rock straight up at 11 m/s and catch it 2.5 s later. While you visit the surface, your cruise ship orbits at an altitude equal to the planet’s radius every 230 min. What are the (a) mass and (b) radius of Planet Physics?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 5

Part (a)

Our aim is to find the mass of Planet Physics.

The initial speed of the rock \(v_{0}=11 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}\)

The time of flight of the rock \(=2.5 \mathrm{~s}\)

The height above the surface of the planet to the cruise ship \(\mathrm{h}=2 \mathrm{R}\)

The time period of the satellite \(\mathrm{T}=230 \mathrm{~min}=13,800 \mathrm{~s}\)

The gravitational constant \(\mathrm{G}=6.67 \times 10^{-7} \mathrm{Nm}^{2} / \mathrm{kg}^{2}\)
