1. Discovery of Homo habilis: In 1960, East African archaeologists Mary and Louis Leakey uncovered the first Homo habilis fossils in Olduvai Gorge, located in modern-day Tanzania. The Leakeys made several more discoveries in the area, suggesting that Homo habilis was an early human species. These fossils were the earliest ever found, and provided the first evidence of upright walking, stone tool-making and hunting. Homo habilis was one of the earliest members of the Homo genus family, suggesting that it is an ancestor of Homo sapiens.
