Under certain conditions, nitrogen gas reacts with oxygen gas to form nitrogen monoxide gas.

(a) Write a balanced equation for this reaction.

(b) What happens to the oxidation number of a nitrogen atom when it changes from a reactant to a product? How many electrons are transferred? Does nitrogen gain them or lose them?

(c) What happens to the oxidation number of an oxygen atom when it changes from a reactant to a product? How many electrons are transferred? Does oxygen gain them or lose them?
