Neutron activation analysis is a nondestructive method for determining the elements present in materials. The material is bombarded with neutrons, forming radioactive nuclides with decay energies that can be measured. It is often used to verify the authenticity of paintings by matching the composition of paint with that from other paintings by the same artist. Comment on the statement that a painting found to contain chloride could not have been painted in AD 1648, as claimed, since the element chlorine was not discovered until 1774.
