QUESTION: Problem 17P

Calculate each of the following:

(a) Mass % of H in ammonium bicarbonate

(b) Mass % of O in sodium dihydrogen phosphate heptahydrate

ANSWER:

Solution 17P:

Here, we have to calculate the mass percent of each atom in the molecules.

We can calculate the mass % from the following equation

Mass percent of element X = 100%

Step 1:

(a) Mass % of H in ammonium bicarbonate

Here, we are going to calculate the mass % of H in NH4HCO3

The molar mass of NH4HCO3 =79.056 g/mol

Since,

1.0 mole of NH4HCO3 = 5.0 moles of H

The molar mass of H =1.008 g/mol

Therefore, the mass of H in  NH4HCO3 = 5.0 moles of H

                                        = 5.04 g of H

Therefore,

Mass percent of element H = 100%

                                     = 100% = 6.375 %

Thus,  6.375 % of H is in  ammonium bicarbonate.
