QUESTION: Problem 47P

Elemental sulfur occurs as octatomic molecules, S8. What mass of fluorine gas is needed to react completely with 17.8 g of sulfur to form sulfur hexafluoride?

ANSWER:

Solution 47P

Here we have to calculate what mass of fluorine gas is needed to react completely with 17.8 g of sulfur to form sulfur hexafluoride.

Step 1

Given:

Mass of S8 = 17.8 g

Molar mass of F2 = 37.99 g

Molar mass of S8 = 256.48 g

In order to calculate the mass of fluorine gas, 1st we have to write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction between fluorine  and sulphur to form sulfur hexafluoride.

It is known that the symbol of elemental sulfur occurs as octatomic molecules is S8.

Symbol of Fluorine gas is F2

Symbol for sulfur hexafluoride is SF6

The chemical equation is,

S8 + F2 → SF6

The balanced chemical equation is,

S8 +24 F2 → 8 SF6
