QUESTION:

Problem 40P

Which substance has the lower boiling point? Explain.

(a) LiCl or HCl

(b) NH3 or PH3

(c) Xe or I2

ANSWER:

Solution 40P

Here we have to explain which of the substance has the lower boiling point.

The boiling point of a molecule can be predicted from its  intermolecular forces. Weaker the intermolecular forces, lower will be the boiling point.

Step 1

(a) LiCl or HCl

LiCl shows ionic forces whereas HCl shows dipole-dipole sources. It is known that ionic forces are stronger than that of dipole-dipole forces.

Thus HCl has lower boiling point.
