QUESTION:

Problem 43P

Calculate the molarity of each aqueous solution:

(a) 78.0 mL of 0.240 M NaOH diluted to 0.250 L with water

(b) 38.5 mL of 1.2 M HNO3 diluted to 0.130 L with water

ANSWER:

Solution 43P:

Here, we are going to calculate the molarity of each aqueous solution.

Step 1: (a)

We know that

Molarity (M) =

The molarity of a dilute solution can be calculated by using the following equation:

Mdil Vdil = Mconc Vconc  ----(1)

Where Mdil  is the concentration of dilute solution

Mconc  is the concentration of concentrated solution

Vdil is the volume of dilute solution

Vconc is the volume of concentrated solution

Given that,

Mconc = 0.240 M

Vconc = 78.0 mL =0.078 L

Vdil =0.250 L

Therefore, the concentration of the dilute solution is

Mdil Vdil = Mconc Vconc

Mdil = (Mconc Vconc)/Vdil

Mdil =

           = 0.07488 M

Thus, the concentration of the dilute solution is 0.0749 M.
