QUESTION:

Problem 70P

Rank the following aqueous solutions in order of increasing

(a) osmotic pressure;

(b) boiling point;

(c) freezing point;

(d) vapor pressure at 50°C:

(I) 0.100 m NaNO3

(II) 0.100 m glucose

(III) 0.100 m CaCl2

ANSWER:

Solution 70P:

Here, we are going to rank the following aqueous solutions in order of increasing colligative properties.

Step 1:

Colligative properties depend on the number of solute particles.

Thus, more concentrated a solution, the more the freezing point of solvent will be depressed. Thus, higher molality, decreases the freezing point.

The boiling point increases with the increase in concentration (molality) of the solute, when the non-volatile solute is dissolved in a solvent.

The Osmotic pressure increases with the increase the number of particles.

The vapor pressure decreases with the increase in number of particles.
