QUESTION:

Problem 55P

Predict the effect of increasing the container volume on the amounts of each reactant and product in the following reactions:

(a) F2(g) ⇌ 2F(g)

(b) 2CH4(g) ⇌ C2H2(g) + 3H2(g)

ANSWER:

Solution 55P:

Here, we are going to find out the  effect of increasing the container volume on the amounts of each reactant and product in the following reactions.

Step 1:

(a) F2(g) ⇌ 2F(g)

1.0 mol       2.0 mol

Here, when the volume increases, the reaction shifts so that the total number of gas molecules increases. Therefore, the  equilibrium position shifts towards that side which has more number of moles.

Therefore, with the increasing volume, more F(g) forms than F2.
