QUESTION:

Problem 16P

(a) What is the pH of 0.0111 M NaOH? Is the solution neutral, acidic, or basic?

(b) What is the pOH of 1.35 × 10 -3M HCl? Is the solution neutral, acidic, or basic?

ANSWER:

Solution 16P

Step 1

(a) Here we have to calculate what is the pH of 0.0111 M NaOH and have to explain the solution is neutral, acidic, or basic.

Concentration of [NaOH] = 0.0111 M

It is known that pOH = - log[OH-]

                            = -log (0.0111) = 1.9546

pH = 14.00 - pOH

      = 14.00-1.9546 = 12.045 12.05

Thus the pH of 0.0111 M NaOH is found to be 12.05.

Here pH>7, hence the solution is basic.
