QUESTION:

(a) If these three balloons are all the same size, what angle is formed between the red one and the green one?

(b) If additional air is added to the blue balloon so that it gets larger, what happens to the angle between the red and green balloons?

(c) What aspect of the VSEPR model is illustrated by part (b) [Section9.2]

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

(a) If these three balloons are all the same size, what angle is formed between the red one and the green one?

Solution: As mentioned in the question, the size of the balloons are of the same size. Thus in order to reduce the repulsion between them, they have to be as far as possible. The only angle in which each one of them is at equal angles with each other is 120 degrees.

Thus, the angle formed between the red one and the green one is 120 degrees.
