These definite numbers of atoms present in a molecule are represented as s ubscripts in the molecular formula. For Example : C H2s6he molecular formula of ethane. 1 molecule of ethane contains 2 atoms of Carbon a nd 6 hydrogen (H) atoms. Now, Let’s determine the molecular and empirical formulas for the following : (a) the organic solvent benzene, which has six carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms: Molecular formula : Benzene has 6 Carbon(N) atoms and 6 Hydrogen(H) atoms and therefore, the molecular formula is C H . 6 6 Empirical formula : It is the smallest whole number ratios of the subscripts of the molecular formula. The largest common factor that can divide the subscripts is 6. Therefore, empirical formula for the above compound is CH. (b) the compound silicon tetrachloride, which has a silicon atom and four chlorine atoms and is used in the manufacture of computer chips : Molecular formula : Silicon tetrachloride has 1 Silicon(Si) atom and 4 Chlorine(Cl) atoms and therefore, the molecular formula is SiCl . 4 Empirical formula : It is the smallest whole number ratios of the subscripts of the molecular formula. The molecular formula obtained is already in its smallest positive whole number ratio therefore, empirical formula for the above compound is S iCl4 (c) the reactive substance diborane, which has two boron atoms and six hydrogen atoms : Molecular formula : Diborane has 2 Boron(B) atoms and 6 Hydrogen(H) atoms and therefore, the molecular formula is B H . 2 6 Empirical formula : It is the smallest whole number ratios of the subscripts of the molecular formula. The largest common factor that can divide the subscripts is 2. Therefore, empirical formula for the above compound is BH . 3 (d) the sugar called glucose, which has six carbon atoms, twelve hydrogen atoms, and six oxygen atoms : Molecular formula : Benzene has 6 Carbon(C) atoms and 12 Hydrogen(H) atoms and 6 Oxygen(O) atoms. Therefore, the molecular formula is C H O . 6 12 6 Empirical formula : It is the smallest whole number ratios of the subscripts of the molecular formula. The largest common factor that can divide the subscripts is 6. Therefore, empirical formula for the above compound is CH O. 2
