The plasma membranes of root cells control solute uptake. Root hairs greatly increase a roots absorptive surface. Water and solutes can move through the roots epidermis and cortex by going either through cells or between them. However, all water and solutes must pass through the selectively permeable plasma membranes of cells of the endodermis to enter the xylem (waterconducting tissue) for transport upward.
