Problem 6E

What are the main ideas in Dalton’s atomic theory? How do they help explain the laws of conservation of mass, of constant composition, and of definite proportions?

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

Solution : I is the chemical symbol of Iodine and F is the chemical symbol of Fluorine. The given compound has 1 atom of Iodine(I) and 5 atoms of Fluorine. Hence, the Chemical formula of the given compound is IF . 5 Both I and F are non-metals(Refer in the figure below), hence the compound is molecular compound as molecular compounds generally consists of non -metals. Name of the compound is Iodine pentafluoride. As there are 5 atoms of F and 1 atom of I, we prefix F element name with ‘penta’ greek suffix and replace the last syllable of the name with ‘ide’ and hence the name of the compound is Iodine pentafluoride. Rules for naming molecular compounds is stated below. Rules for naming binary molecular compounds: 1. The names of elements which are present nearer to metals in the periodic table( farther to the left in the periodic table) are written first. An exception occurs when the binary compound contains oxygen and halogens such as c hlorine, bromine, or iodine (except fluorine) where oxygen is written at the end. 2. The name of the second element is given a suffix -ide. 3. Greek prefixes (refer to table shown below) are utilized to expresses the number of atoms of each element. But the prefix 'mono' is not utilized for first element. If the prefix is ending with 'a' or 'o' and if the second element starts with the same vowel 'a' or 'o' then the prefix is not used under these conditions.
