When clothes have stains, bleach is often added to the wash to react with the soil and make the stains colorless. The active ingredient in bleach is sodium hypochlorite 1NaClO2. A bleach solution can be prepared by bubbling chlorine gas into a solution of sodium hydroxide to produce sodium hypochlorite, sodium chloride, and water. A typical bottle of bleach has a volume of 1.42 gal, with a density of 1.08 g/mL and contains 282 g of NaClO. (6.2, 6.3, 7.3, 7.7, 8.6, 9.4)
