(a) Hybridization state and geometry are based on the atom’s sterie number (the number of items attached to the atom) and number of lone pairs. Normally, neutral carbons do not have any lone pairs, so the electronic arrangement around the atom is the same as its geometry. This compound has four C atoms with a steric number of 2, so they are sp hybridized and linear in shape.
