QUESTION:

For each of the following structures determine whether any of the oxygen atoms bear a formal charge: (a) O (b) O (c) O (d) O H H H

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

a.  Oxygen usually has six valence electrons. Bonds contribute one electron and lone pairs add two. This oxygen has three lone pairs and one bond, so it has 3(2) + 1(1) = 7 valence electrons. This is one more than usual, so it has a formal charge of -1.
