Problem 87E

Each compound contains both ionic and covalent bonds. Write ionic Lewis structures for each of them, including the covalent structure for the ion in brackets. Write resonance structures if necessary.

a. BaCO3

b. Ca(OH)2

c. KNO3

d. LiIO

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 87E Step 1 of 4 2- 2+ BaCO is3 salt containing the carbonate ion CO 3 and the Ba ion. In carbonate ion, Carbon is bonded to Oxygen with both simple and double covalent bonds, moreover, three resonance forms can exist for this ion because of the delocalization of the double bond 2+ Since the carbonate ion is a bivalent, negative ion, and since Ba is a positive, bivalent ion. The two ions can join together to form an ionico bond. Obviously we can represent all the three resonance structure for this salt. Step 2 of 4 Ca(OH) 2 OH ion has this Lewis structure: If we calculate formal charges for O Valence electrons - Lone pair electrons - ½ bonded electrons= 6-6-1=-1 this is the meaning of the negative charge. Since Ca has a positive, bivalent charge, the two ions can join together to form an ionic bond. - But there will occurr two negative charges (so two ions OH ions) to balance the bivalent charge of Ca . Thus the formula is and the structure is indicated Ca(OH) 2 Below
