QUESTION:

Draw a Lewis structure for each of the following species:

a. \(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3}\)

b. \(\mathrm{CO}_{3}{ }^{2-}\)

c. \(\mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{O}\)

d. \(\mathrm{CO}_{2}\)

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

Lewis structures, also called electron-dot structures, are diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule, and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule. A Lewis structure can be drawn for any covalently-bonded molecule, as well as coordination compounds.

a) Given molecule - \(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3}\)

In this molecule a carbon atom  is  bonded with  oxygen by double bond and single bond with the remaining two oxygen atoms. Therefore, The Lewis structure of the given molecule is as follows.
