We have to find the smallest allowable length for the given section for which bearing stress in the timber is less than  As we decrease the length the bearing area decreases and corresponding stress in the timber increases.

First we will calculate the bearing area in terms of length, then use it to calculate bearing stress. Equate the bearing stress with the permissible bearing stress to calculate the minimum possible length.
