QUESTION:

For the composite block shown in Prob. 2.33, determine (a) the value of h if the portion of the load carried by the aluminum plates is half the portion of the load carried by the brass core, (b) the total load if the stress in the brass is 80 MPa.

QUESTION:

For the composite block shown in Prob. 2.33, determine (a) the value of h if the portion of the load carried by the aluminum plates is half the portion of the load carried by the brass core, (b) the total load if the stress in the brass is 80 MPa.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

Change in length of Aluminium plates is equal to change in length of Brass core.

\(\delta_{A}=\delta_{B}=\delta\)

Axial centric force is equal to

\(  P=P_{A}+P_{B}\)

From the equation of deflection

\(\delta=\frac{P_{A} L}{E_{A} A_{A}} \text { and } \delta=\frac{P_{B} L}{E_{B} A_{B}}\)

Therefore,

\(P_{a}=\left(E_{a} A_{a}\right) \frac{\delta}{L} ; \quad P_{b}=\left(E_{b} A_{b}\right)\left(\frac{\delta}{L}\right)\)
