Chapter 14, Problem 14.68

(choose chapter or problem)

Laureatin is a natural product isolated from the marine algae Laurencia nipponica that exhibits potent insecticidal activity against mosquitos. During an investigation toward the synthesis of laureatin, an interesting skeletal rearrangement was observed. When compound 1 was treated with a source of electrophilic bromine (e.g., \(\mathrm{Br}_{2}\)), the product isolated was epoxide 2 (J. Org. Chem. 2012, 77, 7883–7890). Propose a plausible mechanism.
