QUESTION:

How would you distinguish between the following compounds using 13C NMR spectroscopy? OH OH

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

This exercise gives us the structure of 4-methylphenol as well as 3-methylphenol. We're asked how we would distinguish between the two compounds using \({ }^{13} \mathrm{C}\) NMR spectroscopy.

Due to an axis of symmetry, the first compound (4-methylphenol) will show only five peaks in the aromatic region of the \({ }^{13} \mathrm{C}\) NMR spectrum.
